The hunger crisis in Africa is dire. Child hunger in Africa is driven by extreme poverty. Poverty remains one of the most significant causes of hunger and malnutrition in African children. According to a study by the African Child Policy Forum, nearly 60 million children in Africa do not have enough food to eat. Nearly half of all child deaths in Africa stem from hunger. Hunger impairs growth and cognitive development of children. COVID-19 is another shock, undermining their livelihoods and pushing them towards hunger and malnutrition. Without their most basic needs being met, many of the 60 million African children are unable to envisage a way out of this and the process continues to repeat itself. Nine out of ten African children do not meet the criteria for minimum acceptable diet outlined by the World Health Organization, and two out of the five do not eat meals regularly.
